EMDR Therapy for Teen Anxiety in New Jersey: What the Research Actually Says

By Denise Takakjy, PhD, LPC-NJ | Healing Hearts Healthy Minds

Have you've been searching for therapy options for you or your teen's anxiety, you've probably come across and wondered what exactly is EMDR.

What Is EMDR, and Why Does It Work for Teens?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. The name sounds complicated however, the idea behind it is not.

When teens go through something distressing such as a panic attack, a traumatic event, chronic stress, bullying, a bad breakup … their brain sometimes gets "stuck" on that experience. The memory doesn't get filed away properly. Instead, it stays raw, and anything that triggers a reminder of it sends the nervous system into overdrive. That's a large part of why anxiety in teens can feel so out of proportion to what's happening right now. The brain isn't just reacting to the present, but rather, it's reacting to something it never finished processing.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones alternating from side to side) while the person briefly focuses on the distressing memory. This activates the brain's natural processing system - similar to what happens during REM sleep - and helps it finally file that memory away correctly. The emotional charge attached to it drops. The teen can think about what happened without the same intensity of panic, shame, or dread. This is what is called neuroscience.

What Does the Research Actually Say?

EMDR has some of the strongest research backing of any trauma and anxiety treatment available:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends EMDR as a first-line treatment for PTSD and trauma — alongside CBT. Not as an alternative but an equal.

  • The American Psychological Association recognizes EMDR as an evidence-based treatment for PTSD.

  • Multiple studies have found that EMDR often produces results faster than traditional talk therapy alone - sometimes in fewer sessions.

  • Research specifically with adolescents shows EMDR is effective and well-tolerated by teens, including those dealing with anxiety disorders, trauma, and self-harm behaviors.

  • A growing body of research supports online/virtual EMDR as comparably effective to in-person delivery, meaning teens don't need to come into an office to benefit from it.

That last point matters a lot for families in New Jersey. Life is busy and teens have school, activities, and more. Virtual EMDR removes that barrier.

Can EMDR Help With Anxiety - Not Just Trauma?

Yes! Anxiety and trauma are more connected than most people realize. A lot of teen anxiety is rooted in experiences that got "stuck" - a humiliating moment in front of a class, a parent's explosive reaction, years of feeling like they had to be perfect to be loved. These aren't always capital-T traumas. But they're experiences the brain is still carrying.

EMDR is effective for:

  • Generalized anxiety

  • Social anxiety

  • Panic attacks

  • Performance anxiety (sports, academics, testing)

  • Anxiety rooted in past experiences or trauma

  • Anxiety that hasn't responded well to talk therapy alone

If you or your teen has been in traditional therapy for anxiety and the progress has stalled, EMDR is often the piece that moves things forward.

Does Virtual EMDR Actually Work? (Yes And Here's Why)

I know the skepticism. "How can you do eye movements over a screen?"

In virtual EMDR, bilateral stimulation is adapted for online delivery. This can include following a moving target on the screen, therapist-guided tapping, or auditory tones through headphones. Research published after the widespread shift to telehealth during the pandemic has confirmed that virtual EMDR produces outcomes consistent with in-person treatment.

For teens especially, being in their own space can actually lower the barrier to going deep. There's no unfamiliar office, no waiting room anxiety, no drive home right after an emotionally intense session. They process in an environment where they feel safe.

At Healing Hearts Healthy Minds, I offer virtual EMDR for teens and young adults (ages 13-24) throughout New Jersey. Sessions are 60-90 minutes — longer than a standard therapy hour, because EMDR needs space to work properly.

What to Expect: The Honest Version

EMDR is not a quick fix but it often moves faster than years of talk therapy circling the same material. Here's what the process generally looks like:

1. Assessment and preparation. Before we start processing, I spend time understanding your teen's history and making sure they have enough coping skills in place to handle what comes up. This isn't skipped. It matters.

2. Targeting the right memories. We identify the specific experiences driving the anxiety — not just what's happening now, but what's underneath it.

3. Processing. The bilateral stimulation happens here, in sets, while your teen holds the memory briefly in mind. I guide the session. They're never doing this alone.

4. Resolution. Over time, the emotional intensity attached to those memories decreases. Teens often describe it as the memory feeling "further away" or like it "doesn't bother them the same way anymore."

For parents dealing with their own trauma or stress around their teen's struggles, I also offer EMDR intensives — 3 or 6-hour sessions designed to work through a significant amount in a shorter window.

Who Is This Right For?

Virtual EMDR in New Jersey through Healing Hearts Healthy Minds is a good fit if:

  • Your teen is between 13-24 and dealing with anxiety, trauma, panic, or self-harm

  • Traditional talk therapy hasn't been enough on its own

  • Your teen is resistant to in-person therapy but open to virtual

  • You're a parent who wants to be involved in the healing process

  • You're a young adult in college or post-high school who's carrying things from the past into the present

It may not be the right first step if your teen is in acute crisis and needs a higher level of care. In that case, I'll tell you that directly and help you find the right fit.
