Finding Your Footing: Mental Health Tools for Building Real Independence

Summer brings unique opportunities for emerging adults to develop independence. This can include moving out, starting jobs, or taking on new responsibilities. Freedom comes with challenges that can feel overwhelming without the proper mental health support.

Core Independence Skills

  1. Emotional Regulation: This is managing intense emotions without relying on others to “fix” things. I recommend developing coping strategies like journaling, exercise, breathing techniques, or mindfulness practices to respond thoughtfully rather than reactively. The goal isn’t eliminating difficult emotions but learning how to navigate them independently.

  2. Healthy Relationships: Have you ever thought about your relationships with others?  I recommend to build boundary-setting skills, clear communication, and learn to recognize relationship red flags. By practicing the difference between supporting others and codependency while maintaining your own emotional wellbeing is essential for your mental health. Independence doesn’t mean isolation…it means choosing healthy connections!

  3. Financial Stress Management: For a large majority of people, especially young adults, and Gen Z, financial stress management and money management can be a major issue in one’s life. Addressing money anxiety by developing practical budgeting skills, creating realistic financial goals, and separating financial concerns from self-worth are important to learn how to do. Remember that financial struggles are temporary situations, not permanent reflections of your capabilities.

Can You Relate To This…?

Take Alex, 22, who recently moved into their first apartment and started a full-time job in Hartford, Connecticut. Initially overwhelmed by work stress, bills, relationship dynamics, and daily responsibilities, Alex felt like they were failing at “adulting.” Simple tasks felt monumental, and every challenge seemed to confirm their fears about not being ready for independence. Through our virtual therapy platform, Alex can access specialized support from the comfort of their Hartford apartment, eliminating travel stress while building independence skills. Our CBT approach helps Alex reframe overwhelming thoughts about ‘failing at adulting’ into manageable action steps, while DBT skills provide practical tools for emotional regulation when workplace conflicts or financial pressures arise. With EMDR, Alex can process any past experiences that fuel self-doubt, ultimately developing the confidence and resilience needed to thrive as an independent adult.

What States Do You Help Young Adults In?

Our virtual therapy services across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut provide structured support for emerging adults:

CBT: helps identify and change negative thought patterns about independence and self-capability. For example, this can help one learn how to challenge catastrophic thinking and develop realistic perspectives on daily challenges.

DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): this teaches practical emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills essential for independent living. DBT allows individuals to gain tools for managing workplace conflicts and setting boundaries with family expectations.

EMDR: This allows you to process past experiences that may be blocking confidence in handling adult responsibilities and move forward without being held back by previous disappointments or traumas.

Through personalized guidance, I will help you learn how to overcome overwhelming challenges into manageable steps, developing effective workplace communication skills, creating healthy boundaries with friends and family, and building confidence in problem-solving abilities.
